Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV) held the 39th Hellenic Marine Technical Committee meeting in Athens. Leading representatives of the Greek shipping community discussed the evolving regulatory requirements, technological developments and strategic factors shaping the global fleet of the future.
The meeting opened with a welcome address and the election of new members by George Sarris, Chairman of the Committee and President of Enterprises Shipping & Trading S.A., who highlighted the importance of continuous collaboration and knowledge sharing as the industry faces increasing regulatory complexity.
The technical programme began with Julien Boulland, Sustainability Strategy Leader of BV, presenting the key regulatory developments following the 2nd Extraordinary Session of MEPC and the review of the work of ISWG-20 on greenhouse gases. His analysis provided a clear picture of the short and medium term priorities that shipowners are called upon to address in the context of the new decarbonisation requirements. This was followed by Vassilios Dimoulas, Technology & Innovation Director of EMA, with a presentation on on-board carbon capture technologies, examining the regulatory aspects, the level of technological maturity and the options for managing captured CO₂.
The session concluded with Vassilis Stamatopoulos, Global Business Development Director of Verifuel, who presented data on the stability and performance of bio-blended fuels, as well as issues related to fuel sampling and mass flow meters in the ARA region.
Special emphasis was also placed on innovation and ship technologies with a long-term compliance perspective. Olivier Cartier, Vice President Technical of BV, presented the latest developments in innovation and advanced research at Bureau Veritas, highlighting emerging solutions that enhance ship efficiency and environmental performance. Dr. Yiannis Kokarakis, Technical Director for BV’s SEEBA zone, presented the topic “The Shaft Generator Story”, analyzing the role of the shaft generator in enhancing environmental friendliness and operational super-efficiency.
