“Today is a day of pride for the country, for the government and for all citizens. Because a Greek Minister of Finance, Kyriakos Pierrakakis, is elected by the eurozone member states as President of the Eurogroup,” Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis stressed in a statement.
Mitsotakis pointed out that “it is a great honor for him – that is why I warmly congratulate him. I wish him a long and fruitful term. And I am certain that in his new role he will also stand out for his hard work and efficiency.”
“This development, however, is the most emphatic recognition of Greece’s positive course. The most powerful reminder that the anxieties and persistence of an entire people have been justified. And, in fact, exactly a decade since the country found itself on the verge of collapse, with closed banks and just before exiting the eurozone,” he added.
“The former ‘’black sheep’’ now at the top of the economic council”
“The former ‘black sheep’’ is now at the top of the economic council of the most developed countries on the continent. And all this thanks to the sacrifices of our fellow citizens.”
“Greece has demonstrated in practice that fiscal consistency is a prerequisite for improving its credibility. And, furthermore, that it can, in combination with bold reforms, keep pace with dynamic growth. Growth that creates jobs and ultimately returns dividends to citizens,” the Greek premier added.
“Important milestone”
“His election is also evidence that our country is confidently moving forward,” he noted.
“The election of the Greek Finance Minister to the leadership of the Eurogroup is an important milestone on this path of progress. An event that gives the country self-confidence. It also arms the government with new momentum to implement its program, with the first stage in 2027 and a horizon of 2030. Above all, however, it sends a resounding message of optimism and national revival that the best is yet to come,” Mitsotakis concluded in his statement.
