The Bruno Leoni Prize 2025 was awarded to Greece at a special ceremony held in Milan. The prize was received by the Governor of the Bank of Greece, Yannis Stournaras.

“Greece was chosen because it had the strength and determination to follow, despite the direct social cost, the difficult path of economic consolidation and growth,” according to the officials.

Asked about the structural reforms implemented in Greece, the governor of the Bank of Greece replied:
“We made the tax system functional, creating an autonomous authority for taxation. We approved interventions for pensions, we protected the banking system. Today we have only four systemic banks, instead of ten. We reformed the labor market. And we focused our interventions on the areas of bureaucracy, which has been reduced, but still presents some problems. Now we need to improve infrastructure, transport, the quality of services, Justice. However, a lot has been done.

Responding to a question from Corriere on the Greek advice to Europe, Stournaras underlined: “You cannot lead a country with large deficits. Today, we have a primary surplus of 3.6%. It is a responsibility for future generations.”

On the importance of political stability, he described it as of primary importance. “The government and parliament that support the necessary measures need a rational approach. Without stability, it is difficult to achieve. Today, we have stability with the Mitsotakis government and less populism,” Stournaras explained.
