The launch of Hyperion GR1, the first of seven satellites being manufactured in Greece by Open Cosmos Aegean under the National Small Satellites Programme, is scheduled for July.
Hyperion GR1 will be the first satellite of Greece’s Hyperion constellation to be placed into orbit by the company. The 100-kilogram satellite will provide imagery with a resolution of 90 centimeters in the panchromatic spectrum and will feature onboard artificial intelligence capabilities for data processing. In addition, it will support inter-satellite communications, enabling faster data transmission. With the commencement of the operational phase, the ground station installed to support the programme will also become fully operational.
According to the company, the infrastructure developed in Greece now covers the entire value chain, from satellite manufacturing and testing to the operation of satellite systems.
The seven satellites of the Hyperion programme will not share identical specifications. Two of them will be equipped with very high-resolution cameras for Earth observation applications, while the remaining satellites will carry payloads for multispectral and hyperspectral imaging, Short-Wave Infrared (SWIR) sensing, Internet of Things (IoT) receivers, and Automatic Identification System (AIS) technology for vessel tracking.
The data generated by the constellation will support a broad range of applications, including natural disaster monitoring, precision agriculture, environmental surveillance, maritime domain awareness, and public-sector services that rely on geospatial intelligence.
Alongside the Greek programme, Open Cosmos Aegean is also involved in the development of technologies and subsystems deployed in the group’s international missions. The Greek satellites will become part of the OpenConstellation, the satellite network operated by Open Cosmos, through which data and services are provided to public authorities, research institutions and commercial organizations.
The company currently employs approximately 30 engineers and specialized professionals at its facilities in Pallini. According to management, the Greek subsidiary is evolving into one of the group’s principal production hubs in Europe.
