A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Skaramangas Shipyards and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. Ltd. during the Posidonia 2026 International Maritime Exhibition.
The MoU establishes a framework for cooperation in the joint construction of surface vessels for the requirements of the Navy and Coast Guard, targeting opportunities across the European market. Present at the signing ceremony were Miltiadis Varvitsiotis, Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Skaramangas Shipyards, Kim Jae Rak, Senior Vice President of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, Stefanos Gkikas, Deputy Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, and Ju-seong Lim, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Greece.
Just two years after the relaunch of Skaramangas Shipyards
In their joint statements, Varvitsiotis highlighted, among other points, “the significance of the strategic partnership between the world’s largest shipyard and Greece’s largest shipyard, as well as one of the largest in the Mediterranean, achieved just two years after the resumption of operations at Skaramangas Shipyards.” He also expressed his sincere appreciation to the governments of Greece and the Republic of Korea, which “facilitated and actively supported this initiative.”
On his part, Jae Rak noted that “during the early stages of Hyundai Heavy Industries’ shipbuilding activities, the company was supported by Greek shipowners. Building on that support—which continues to this day—it has grown into the world’s largest private shipyard. That trust evolved into friendship, and with the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding with Skaramangas Shipyards, the foundations have been laid for a long-term partnership, not only in the Greek market but also for the expansion of cooperation throughout the European Union and beyond.”
