Prodea Investments is entering the digital infrastructure market, and more specifically the data center sector, through its participation in the development of an interconnection data center in Chania, Crete.
According to sources, the initial investment amounts to 70 million euros and concerns the development of a 7 MW data center with potential for future expansion, in partnership with Quadrivium Digital Hellas.
Although the project is still at an early stage, it is particularly noteworthy that Prodea intends to acquire a 30% stake in Quadrivium Digital Hellas, while also providing the company with a bond loan of up to 15 million euros carrying a 12% interest rate.
Digital infrastructure represents the third strategic sector of interest for Prodea. According to market estimates, it is expected to remain a distinct business category, as the REIC is now primarily focused on hospitality assets and logistics, seeking to organize its portfolio around two main pillars.
Financing for the project is expected to come through a combination of Prodea’s own funds, bank lending and resources from Greece’s Recovery and Resilience Fund.
The selection of Crete is linked to the fact that several international fiber-optic cables terminate on the island, with additional ones expected in the coming years. At the same time, the project’s designation as an interconnection data center indicates that it will function as a network and telecommunications interconnection hub rather than a conventional corporate data center.
