Port authorities are carrying out investigations into the causes of the sinking of the cargo vessel “Corsage C” north of Andros, as a large-scale preventive anti-pollution operation continues in the wider maritime area.

According to initial assessments, the wreck lies at a depth of approximately 40 meters, while an estimated 6 to 7 cubic meters of diesel fuel remain in the vessel’s tanks. Sources familiar with the operation stated that the quantity is considered manageable and can be effectively handled by the vessels operating in the area. Specialized diving teams are expected to carry out underwater inspections on Thursday in order to assess the condition of the hull, while the vessel’s insurance company is also expected to be informed about the progress of the operations and the necessary next steps.

The “Corsage C” had departed from a port in Albania bound for Ukraine, carrying approximately 8,000 metric tons of soda ash. According to preliminary information, the vessel grounded on a rocky area north of Andros, causing severe damage to the hull and extensive water ingress. The ship rapidly lost watertight integrity and eventually sank.

Arrests

The Port Authority of Andros proceeded with the arrest of the vessel’s 52-year-old captain and 32-year-old bridge officer as part of the preliminary investigation into the incident. Criminal charges were filed against them for alleged violations of Articles 28 concerning negligence, 273 concerning dangerous damage to public safety, 274 concerning the creation of public danger through negligence, and 277 of the Penal Code concerning the causing of a shipwreck.

The exact circumstances under which the vessel grounded on the rocky area remain under investigation.
