A clear message of realism on risk management in the dry bulk sector was delivered by DryDel Shipping CEO Costas Delaportas, speaking at Geneva Dry 2026.

As he noted, in an environment of heightened geopolitical tensions, fuel efficiency becomes critically important, favouring slow steaming policies. “With approximately 30,000 vessels worldwide, saving 8–10 tonnes per vessel per day makes a tangible difference,” he said.

Referring to investment decisions, he stressed that the key criterion is no longer scrap value, but rather energy efficiency and modern design, which determine a vessel’s performance. At the same time, he pointed out that rising fuel prices are enhancing the commercial advantage of efficient vessels, which command higher freight rates.

“We are all in the same boat,” he concluded, underscoring the need for flexibility and cooperation in an environment of persistent uncertainty.
