The Hellenic Chamber of Shipping (HCS), chaired by George S. Alexandratos, underscored the multifaceted role of the oceans, both in sustaining life on the planet and in underpinning the global economy.

Covering more than 70% of the Earth’s surface, the oceans play a critical role in climate regulation by absorbing vast amounts of carbon dioxide and heat, while also hosting immense biodiversity.

For the shipping industry—through which more than 80% of global trade is transported—the sustainability of marine ecosystems is a fundamental prerequisite.

The HCS noted that climate change, plastic pollution and overfishing are intensifying pressure on the oceans. In this context, it also highlighted the initiative by the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, featuring a 440 sq.m. map dedicated to the “global ocean.”
