UKMTO has received a report of an incident 15NM northeast of OMAN. The Master of a Greek-owned container ship reported that the vessel was approached by 1 IRGC gun boat, no VHF challenge that then fired upon the vessel which has caused heavy damage to the bridge.

According to maritime security firm Diaplous, the master of the containership “EPAMINONDAS” (IMO 9153862), flying the Liberian flag and managed by Maersk, reported that a patrol boat of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) approached the vessel without prior communication over VHF and subsequently opened fire.

The attack caused significant damage to the vessel’s bridge, while, according to the same report, all crew members are safe.

No fires or environmental impact reported.

The vessel had departed from the port of Jebel Ali in the United Arab Emirates bound for Mundra, India, at a time when navigational safety in the wider region remains highly fragile amid heightened geopolitical tensions.
