The International Maritime Organization (IMO), whose secretary-general is Arsenio Dominguez, has called on member states to express interest in technical assistance aimed at conducting feasibility studies to support pilot projects for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from ships.

The initiative forms part of the IMO’s 2023 strategy, which targets net-zero emissions by 2050 and seeks to accelerate the uptake of “green” technologies and fuels by 2030.

This year’s call under the GreenVoyage2050 Accelerator program focuses on passenger vessels, such as ferries and Ro-Pax ships, which—due to their fixed routes—are well suited to the deployment of low-emission solutions.

As noted, the public-service nature of these vessels facilitates investment decisions, while pilot projects can deliver immediate benefits for local communities.
