Open Cosmos: Participation in NASA’s FAME program with artificial intelligence satellites

The strengthening of Open Cosmos’s presence in advanced artificial intelligence applications in space is reflected in its participation in the Flight Demonstration of Federated Autonomous MEasurement (FAME) program, in collaboration with Ubotica Technologies and under the coordination of NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Open Cosmos operates a subsidiary in Greece, which is manufacturing 7 out of the 13 microsatellites of the national microsatellite program at its state-of-the-art facilities in Pallini. Specifically, two operational satellites of Open Cosmos, equipped with Ubotica’s SPACE:AI platform, will be integrated into the FAME network as part of the Advanced Information Systems Technology program of NASA’s Earth Science Technology Office.

FAME is set to establish a new model in Earth observation, enabling the interconnection of more than 50 satellites into a federated, intelligent network capable of autonomously detecting, analyzing and responding to events in near real time.

At the core of Open Cosmos’ contribution are two satellites, HAMMER and Accenture-1 (SUAC), featuring hyperspectral imaging capabilities and embedded artificial intelligence through Ubotica’s platform. Open Cosmos has developed, designed, manufactured and operates these satellites to deliver real-time insights to end users. All Open Cosmos satellites within the Open Constellation incorporate these advanced capabilities.

This development marks an important change in how satellite data are collected and utilized, shifting processing from delayed, ground-based analysis to real-time, in-orbit decision-making. This approach significantly reduces latency in both satellite tasking and data delivery, creating a fully integrated end-to-end system in which insights can be generated and acted upon within minutes, rather than hours or even days.
