The Hellenic Centre for Defence Innovation (ELKAK) has been designated as the National Focal Point (NFP) for the European Defence Fund (EDF 2021–2027).
In this capacity, ELKAK will operate as the national hub for information, guidance and networking, connecting Greek entities—companies, SMEs and research centres—with the EDF 2026 funding program.
The objective is to enable them to fully leverage the Fund’s financing opportunities and play a leading role in European defence consortia. ELKAK will also provide updates on national support procedures and forthcoming funding calls under the 1.0-billion-euro European defence innovation program. Its support as NFP to the Greek market is structured around three key pillars: up-to-date information, guidance on European and national procedures, and facilitation of partnerships within European consortia.
Greece’s performance
Based on current data, Greece has capitalised early on the opportunities offered by the EDF and remains at the forefront of developments. The number of participating Greek entities increased from 44 in 2021 (the launch year of the EDF) to 83 in 2024. Greece ranks 5th in terms of participating companies, 5th in the number of R&D projects, 3rd as a coordinator of R&D projects, and 5th in terms of funding absorption, amounting to 180 million euros.
As Georgios Pouraimis, National Focal Point – European Defence Fund at the Directorate for Development, Ecosystem Support and Technology Transfer, stated to Naftemporiki: “Greece is dynamically positioning itself on the European defence map. We did not start from scratch. Behind the first Hellenic EDF Info Day organised on March 19 to present EDF 2026, lies a community that was already active, already networking, and already convinced that Greece has a place in this European effort. Companies, researchers, universities and innovation stakeholders all recognised the opportunity. The NFP brings structure and institutional strength to this momentum. The European Defence Fund represents an opportunity for Greece to help shape next-generation defence technologies alongside its European partners. Greece is not merely present in this discussion—we have the expertise, the geography and the human capital. We are both optimistic and ambitious, because we know that when Greece is organized and focused, results follow.”
