“The success of the Vertical Corridor changes the balance,” Environment and Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou, said, noting that “it creates alternative routes for Europe, upgrades Greece’s role as a reliable energy hub in the region and limits Turkey’s energy role.”

“It is a matter of national interest and strategic choice. It is much more than a natural gas corridor, it is a trade, transport and interconnection corridor,” he said, speaking to ERT on Monday, and reiterated that when we talk about the Vertical Corridor “we are talking about a complex project without precedent. It is neither simple nor instantaneous, but strategic.”

As he emphasized, Europe’s recent decision to completely become independent from Russian natural gas by 2027 constitutes a change in balance in the wider region, as “one cannot support Ukraine, which is being illegally invaded, and on the other hand finance Russia.” In this new environment, Greece, through the Vertical Corridor, is acquiring the role of an alternative energy corridor to Europe, the Minister of Environment and Energy noted.

Referring to international developments, he noted that the United States attaches particular importance to the success of the Vertical Corridor, as the convening of a meeting of Energy Ministers of the countries involved on February 24 has already been announced. At the same time, he pointed out that the success of the project is a matter of national strategy, emphasizing that “it has nothing to do with parties or individuals, but with our country.”

Chevron in Greece for signatures

Regarding the collaboration with Chevron, the minister stated that “it has passed the Court of Auditors and in the next two weeks Chevron’s leadership will come to Greece to sign the four contracts”, clarifying that immediately after that the process will proceed to Parliament.

As he noted, “less than a year has passed since we announced it, in record time, our country has completed all the institutional stages to move forward with Chevron”, while he set the goal of “the launch of geophysical and seismic surveys in the second half of 2026.”
