The US Ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Guilfoyle, was welcomed at the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy by Minister Vassilis Kikilias.
The Minister’s meeting with the Ambassador took place in the context of deepening the strategic cooperation between Greece and the US in the shipbuilding and maritime sector, and given the primacy of Greek-owned shipping in the global merchant fleet.
After the meeting, Kikilias and Guilfoyle boarded the ship “Hellas Liberty” in the port of Piraeus, which was built in the USA during World War II and is now a floating museum of Greek maritime history.
Kikilias: We are very proud and happy to have the Ambassador of the United States, Ms. Guilfoyle, here with us today. Our cooperation will aim at the prosperity and development of the two countries, the United States and Greece, the American family and the Greek family. On issues of port infrastructure, American investments in Greece, port infrastructure, issues of agreements related to shipping and security issues. We are very happy to have her here and immediately after that we will go to one of the three remaining Liberty ships in the world, which is located in the port of Piraeus. This particular ship actively participated in the Normandy landings. In 1943, every two days, the American shipbuilding industry produced one such ship, it is impressive. These ships helped in the fight against Nazism and it is a symbolic move, because we believe and want to restart the maritime cooperation between the USA and Greece.
Guilfoyle: It is an honor to serve as the United States Ambassador to Greece, such an incredible maritime powerhouse. Greece has long been a strong partner for the United States in many areas, but shipping stands out for its vital role in ensuring the stability and growth of global trade. Greece’s continued contributions to the global maritime sector ensure that its critical role as a regional and global hub will grow and strengthen even further in the years to come.
President Donald J. Trump issued his executive order on the revival of America’s maritime dominance in April of his first term, underscoring the importance he places on this sector. This executive order includes working with allies to strengthen the shipbuilding capacity of the United States, and Greece and Greek companies have responded to that call. Thank you for that.
Strong allies deserve and will receive strong partnerships, based on respect, reciprocity, and most importantly, results. And that is exactly what we intend to do and have been working on for many months, even before my arrival.
I want to thank you all, and I want to thank you for your leadership and for what you have done for this bilateral relationship between our two great nations.
