Digital, energy transition and electrification are shaping the electrical Installations sector, while there is an increase in imports and exports of electrical equipment.

The existence of illegal professionals without a license or certification, the irregular renewal of Installer Declarations and the absence of a comprehensive digital registry of installers that limit safety and create unfair competition are key problems and challenges for the healthy development of the Electrical Installations sector, as highlighted by a relevant study by IOBE and the Hellenic Institute of Electrical Installation Technology, entitled “The Electrical Installations Sector in Greece: Trends and Prospects”.

Opportunities and challenges

According to the study, the sector is at the crossroads of energy and digital transition and has a direct relationship and catalytic role in areas such as Data Centers, Telecommunications Networks and Cloud Computing, Industry 4.0, Critical Infrastructure, Smart Buildings and Facilities, Energy Storage Infrastructure and Microgrids, Infrastructure Cybersecurity, Electric Charging Stations. This is a development that creates challenges but also significant opportunities since the safety and reliability of electrical installations are becoming increasingly important due to the increasing demands from RES, electromobility, and advanced digital systems.

The challenges are mainly related to safety and compliance with standards, with close cooperation with regulatory authorities and supervisory organizations to intensify controls and supervision in the electrical equipment market in Greece. Opportunities include the improvement of old electrical infrastructures, which must be adapted to modern needs for greater flexibility and safety, the upgrading of protection systems, in order to address risks from overload, overvoltage and electromagnetic effects, which are becoming increasingly frequent due to the increasing use of electronic devices and networks.

However, the development of the sector requires an increase in demand for quality and safe installations, which can be achieved through consumer information, incentives for investment and support for innovation. Its quality directly depends on the level of training of professionals. Investments are required in technical education, skills certification and continuous training programs so that electricians meet the requirements of new technologies, standards and systems.
