A delegation from the Economic Section of the United States Embassy in Athens, led by Brian Timm-Brock (General Secretary, Economic Section) and Timothy Haynes (Deputy Economic Advisor), visited the Port of Heraklion.
The purpose of the meeting with the CEO of the port, Minas Papadakis, and with management executives, was to provide information on the development activities of the Heraklion Port Authority, to exchange views on current developments, and to explore possibilities for future cooperation.
The discussions focused on issues of the passenger and commercial sectors, cruise, digital modernization, environmental management and investment opportunities that strengthen the local and national economy.
The discussion was focused on:
- Understanding the operational priorities and infrastructure projects of the port.
- Examining opportunities for bilateral cooperation in green energy sectors
- Exchange of best practices regarding the sustainable management of port operations.
- Presentation of the current and planned infrastructure projects of the port
- Pier extensions, security projects, cargo service upgrade, digitalization
- At the energy level with specific projects (ship electrification, photovoltaic parks, the port of Heraklion as a green port certified with Eco Ports
- Initiatives to reduce the environmental footprint of port operations (alternative fuels, waste management, energy saving).
- Exchange of know-how, cybersecurity.
- Information on the importance of the port in the local economy and supply chains.
- Information on tourist traffic and in the Cruise sector where the port of Heraklion operates not only as a port of call but also as a Home port
- Information on the commercial sector with imports and exports
Brian Timm-Brock, Secretary General of the Economic Section of the US Embassy, said that “Our visit to the Port of Heraklion confirms the important role that the port plays in the economic development of Crete. We are impressed by the initiatives for sustainable management. The US Embassy stands ready to support initiatives that enhance entrepreneurship, connectivity, and the green transition in port operations.”
Timothy Haynes, Deputy Economic Counselor of the US Embassy, noted that “the exchange of expertise and investment opportunities can bring significant benefits to the local economy and the supply chains of the Mediterranean.”
