IRIS Payments: Historic high for direct payments – Value estimated at 11 billion euros

The number of transactions via IRIS is expected to reach 120 million euros by 2025, while their value is seen reaching 11 billion euros, signaling a historic high, following the availability of the interbank direct money transfer service from account to account from December 1 at all physical points of transaction (POS) and in all online stores in the country.

With the expansion of IRIS Commerce, which has no limit on the amount of transactions, direct IRIS payments become available everywhere: in physical stores, in e-shops, in transactions with friends and in payments to professionals & public bodies, creating a comprehensive payment experience, and completing the “IRIS Everywhere” project.

Historical highs in IRIS transactions

This new milestone makes Greece the first country in Europe with universal acceptance of direct account-to-account (A2A) payments at every point of sale.

Consequently, the adoption of IRIS is at historical highs, DIAS pointed out, as 120 million IRIS transactions are expected in 2025, worth 11 billion euros, with 4.2 million registered users in the Person to Person (IRIS P2P) service, 580 thousand freelancers in the Person to Professionals (IRIS P2Pro) service and presence in all POS & e-shops in the country in the IRIS Commerce service.

“As of December 1, Greece will for the first time acquire a single, national means of instant payments at every point of transaction,” said Stavroula Kambouridou, CEO of DIAS.

European interconnection

DIAS is not stopping here. Its next step is bigger and envisages the interconnection of IRIS with the pan-European network.

As Kambouridou stated, “with Greece now forming one of the most mature instant payments markets in Europe, in 2026 we are moving forward with the next big step: the interconnection in phase 1 of IRIS P2P with the European EuroPA network, so that instant payments for Greeks can operate just as easily, reliably and cross-border.”
