“I believe that there will be American investments in Greek port infrastructure in the coming months. The Greek government will move with transparency, but also determination based on the European legislative framework, so that our port infrastructure is upgraded, having a geostrategic and developmental role,” the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, Vassilis Kikilias, said in an interview.
At the same time, he reiterated that Greece’s strategic choices in the energy sector are aligned with those of the United States in the liquefied natural gas sector.
Speaking to “Real News”, he stressed that “the surplus value created by investments in the wider area of a port, the supporting professions that are developed, that is, the ecosystem that is created – construction, administrative, technological – come to complement the almighty Greek ocean-going shipping.”
“The agreements are respected”
As he noted, “the government’s agreement with ONEX concerns the Elefsis Shipyards. It is very important, since it gives them the possibility of other uses (storage, port, energy) through a legislative provision. Regarding the port of Elefsis, as well as other port infrastructures in the country, during my recent trip to the US, with the approval of the Prime Minister, I had detailed discussions with high-ranking officials of the US government”, while clarifying once again that “Greece operates in its international relations with clear and stable rules, with respect for European and international law. This means that the agreements concluded by our country are respected by all sides and are not changed on the basis of rumors or circumstantial tensions. The country is moving forward institutionally and with respect for what has been agreed.”
“Aiming to invest in our own energy sources”
“The US is extracting shale gas and seeking to export it to Europe, and the Greek-owned fleet constitutes approximately 21% of the global merchant fleet, holding a significant share of LNG carriers,” Kikilias noted.
“This combination of production, shipping power and infrastructure upgrades our country’s overall role on the energy map. At the same time, Greece is actively participating in the redesign of its energy landscape, through hydrocarbon exploration in areas such as Crete and the Ionian Sea, while there is also the prospect of new drilling in the Aegean,” he emphasized, and added: “Our government’s goal with these agreements is to invest in our own energy sources beyond RES and to limit energy costs.”
