The commitment of the Operators of Greece and Saudi Arabia – IPTO and National Grid – to promoting the electrical interconnection between the two countries was confirmed by a recent meeting of the two parties that took place last week.

According to competent sources with knowledge of the matter who spoke with “N”, the two sides decided to proceed to the next stage of the studies for the “Saudi – Greek Interconnection” project, which will include the implementation of a “feasibility study.”

This study is considered extremely critical as it is expected to show what kind of work can be done to interconnect the two countries as well as the accompanying projects required to support it and concern, among other things, the strengthening of Greece’s electrical system in order to be able to support the new energy flows that will arrive at the Greek “electrical borders”.

According to the current plan, as reported by the same sources, the results of the study are expected to emerge around March or May 2026, to be followed by their evaluation, which will determine the final investment decision for the project.

The two Operators have proceeded to establish joint “working groups”, which are working steadily to further mature the project.

Although the basic details of the project will be judged by the results of the feasibility study, however, the budget of the project, over 2,000 km in length, is expected to exceed 5 billion euros with the route including an undersea route through Suez to end up on Greek territory.

The President and CEO of IPTO Manos Manousakis, speaking in the context of the 14th Arab-Hellenic Economic Forum held on November 27-28, said that this ambitious “project” is part of a broader plan for “electrical corridors” both between countries and intercontinentally with the aim of offering the green energy produced there and when it is needed for consumption, thus giving an outlet to the existing production surplus.

As underlined among others in the context of the conference, the Arab countries from the Middle East to North Africa have significant solar potential that could be exploited for the “greening” of Europe’s energy mix, maintaining a clear economic benefit due to the lower average cost of solar energy presented by these markets.
