The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, in collaboration with the Ministry of National Economy and Finance, is promoting two important moves to support unemployed seafarers.

This involves doubling the unemployment benefit for seafarers from 300 to 600 euros, as well as significantly expanding the number of beneficiaries.

More specifically, by order of Minister Vasilis Kikilias, the procedures for implementing the increase in the allowance are being immediately activated, while the relevant funding has already been secured by the financial staff, as well as the inclusion of the measure in the multi-year planning of the Ministry of Finance.

At the same time, the substantial expansion of the categories that will be entitled to the allowance is progressing, so as to include more seafarers who were previously excluded.

In this way, a permanent request of the Panhellenic Seamen Federation (PNO) for the formation of fair support conditions for the maritime family is being met.

Kikilias stated to “N”: “For many years, the shipping industry has been calling for a fairer and more balanced approach to the issue of supporting those who are temporarily out of work.

In my last meeting with the Secretary General of the Panhellenic Seamen Federation, I had committed that the Ministry would provide a specific solution.

Today, we are implementing this commitment with a substantive intervention that truly supports the people of the sea.

We are moving forward with almost doubling the unemployment benefit and with a very significant expansion of beneficiaries, so that the protection framework meets the real needs of the industry.

This intervention corrects past injustices and creates more stable conditions for all seafarers.”

In fact, he explained: “In order to implement such a change, serious technical preparation and complete documentation were required.

A study was carried out and the appropriate economic framework was formed, so that the decision would not be occasional, but part of a long-term plan.

I would like to thank the Minister of National Economy and Finance, Kyriakos Pierrakakis, and the Deputy Minister, Thanos Petralias, for their cooperation and for the official inclusion of the measure in the multi-year planning of the Ministry of Finance.”

Act of responsibility

“For us at the Ministry,” the minister added, “supporting people who serve shipping is not a theory, but a practice and a responsibility.

Today’s initiative strengthens the security of an entire professional field and clearly recognizes the contribution of seafarers to the economy and cohesion of the country.

We will continue with the same commitment to shaping a framework that responds to their real needs and honors the effort and value of their work.”
