HELLENiQ ENERGY has set foot in Geneva – one of the most important international energy trading hubs. A new, international company of the group, HELLENiQ Petroleum Trading, based in the wonderful city of Switzerland, is now a milestone in the implementation of HELLENiQ ENERGY’s international development strategy.

The inauguration of the new company of the Greek energy giant took place last Thursday in Geneva and “N” was there, recording the enormous interest of hundreds of representatives of the international trading community and financial institutions in HELLENiQ ENERGY’s new extroverted business venture.

“The fact that we chose to start all our foreign commercial activity in Geneva shows both the trust we have in the city that brings together many companies of the international trading community, but also the willingness we have as a company to go beyond our borders,” Andreas Shiamishis, CEO of HELLENiQ ENERGY, stated to “N”. For a person who guides the energy group HELLENiQ ENERGY into a new era of innovation and sustainable development, the establishment of HELLENiQ Petroleum Trading is an important milestone in the 5-year Vision 2025 development strategy.

“The fact that we are a Greek company does not limit us to Greece, on the contrary it tells us that we must move forward and expand abroad. And we are doing this, aiming for greater extroversion,” he emphasized to “N”. Geneva offers “the environment, the know-how and the ecosystem that will allow the acceleration of our growth and will strengthen our resilience in a changing energy market.”

The CEO of HELLENiQ ENERGY explained that the new unit will initially handle the group’s transactions related to the supply of raw materials for refineries, as well as international sales – approximately 25 million tons of crude and oil products per year – with the possibility of expanding to third-party trading.

In Geneva, HELLENiQ Petroleum Trading will be the group’s single platform for connecting with international commodity markets, allowing for a deeper understanding of the markets and more flexible cooperation with respective companies. “This new company reflects our commitment to a more flexible, extroverted and competitive Energy group – a group that leads in Greece, grows in Southeastern Europe and cooperates effectively with international markets,” underlined Andreas Shiamishis.

“Energy hub for many years”

The discussion with the CEO of HELLENiQ ENERGY was focused on the latest important developments, with the major agreements with the US in the energy sector. Shiamishis did not seem surprised: “We believe that we have been a hub for many years, because Greek refineries are the main suppliers throughout the Eastern Mediterranean. Both we and Motor Oil are highly export-oriented companies. The fact that natural gas has now also entered and of course all the geopolitical change that we saw with Russia and with the decision of the EU to gradually stop the flow of Russian natural gas, leaves even more opportunities for Greek companies. But also in Greece at the national level, so that our country can have a more important, a more substantial geopolitical role. Therefore, we only see this development positively.”

The plans for Thessaloniki

However, HELLENiQ ENERGY also has big plans for Thessaloniki, bringing back to the fore projects and investments that had remained pending in previous years. Among them, the Thessaloniki FSRU is “returning”, which the company now sees as a crucial tool for strengthening its natural gas portfolio and diversifying its supply sources.

“After 13 years, the pipeline that previously transported crude oil from Thessaloniki to Skopje will resume. It will transport refined products and mainly diesel. This gives us the opportunity to go even further, to the Western Balkans. This can only be positive, because it gives our company enhanced export sales potential, but also upgrades Greece’s role  in the entire energy scene that exists in the Balkans and Southeastern Europe.”

“Significant geopolitical developments”

Present in Geneva was the chairman of the group’s Board of Directors, Spilios Livanos, who told “N”: “We live in an era of tectonic geopolitical developments and radical changes in the energy sector. Greece is transforming into an energy hub of development, security and prosperity for our region, while at the same time HELLENiQ ENERGY is vindicating its strategic evolution, implementing its strategic plan ‘Vision 25’ and leading this new era. Following the announcement of exceptional financial results, the signing of the historic agreement with Exxon Mobil and Energean for hydrocarbon extraction in Block 2 West of Corfu, the acquisition by the Italian giant Edison of 50% of Elpedison, the creation of Enerwave, the group’s new energy company, the launch of the Helleniq Energy Center for Sustainability and Energy @ Alba Graduate School, we are moving forward to the next important milestone in our development path: the creation of HELLENiQ Petroleum Trading SA, the new company of the HELLENiQ ENERGY Group, which will deepen our activities, so that we remain the largest vertically integrated energy group, not only in Greece, but also in the entire Southeastern Europe.”

The Consul General of Greece in Geneva, Alexandros Yennimatas, who attended the event, also spoke to “N”.

“It is with great pleasure that we host here today a Greek energy group with international influence, which is expanding its activities, inaugurating its presence in this city that is so closely linked to Greece. The city of the great markets of the Middle Ages, but still today a major hub of international transactions. An extroverted city, with a significant Greek imprint, which hosted the great Ioannis Kapodistrias before he took over the reins of the newly established state. A city that joined Switzerland thanks to his efforts, while at the same time we must remember that Switzerland owes a great deal to Kapodistrias, among other things, its federal structure, the way the regime operates, as well as the conventional form of neutrality. Kapodistrias is considered a national benefactor in Switzerland for all the positive things he has offered to this country,” emphasized the Consul General of Greece in Geneva, Alexandros Gennimatas, to “N”.
