The need for immediate intervention by US and European authorities for the safe removal of the tankers of the “shadow fleet” was underlined by shipowner Evangelos Marinakis, in an interview with the president of Capital Link, Nikos Bornozis.

The founder of Capital Maritime & Trading warned that this particular fleet constitutes a growing risk to safety and the environment, as many ships operate without insurance, without adequately trained crews and basic maintenance.

Marinakis called on the US and EU to allow a short-term exemption, so that buyers could legally send money for the dismantling of sanctioned ships. He stressed that even a 10%-20% reduction in the “shadow fleet” would have a substantial positive impact on maritime safety.
