Container traffic at piers II and III of the Piraeus Container Terminal showed a significant decline in October 2025.

The significant drop was recorded in a period traditionally characterized by high cargo activity in view of the holidays.

Market representatives attributed the drop in cargo volume to the fact that shipping normality in the Red Sea has not been fully restored after the Houthi attacks, and as a result a significant number of ships continue to avoid this particular sea route.

At the same time, they reported that confusion continues to prevail in the global container market due to changes in US and Chinese tariffs, with successive announcements, exemptions and revisions creating uncertainty for importers and affecting the flow of cargo to European ports.

They noted that while traditionally the months of September and October are one of the most dynamic periods for the movement of goods, as they precede the festive demand of Christmas, this year has significantly deviated from the norm.

They also stressed that many container ships continue to choose to circumnavigate Africa, bypassing the Suez Canal, limiting the volume reaching Piraeus.

Piraeus decline

According to data from COSCO Shipping Ports, in October 2025, a total of 311 thousand containers were handled from piers II and III of the port of Piraeus, compared to 391 thousand in the same month of 2024, recording a decrease of 20.5%.

At a ten-month level, from January 2025 to October 2025, a total of 3.344 million containers were handled, compared to 3.498 million in the corresponding period of 2024, recording a decrease of 4.4%.

The picture was also negative in September 2025, during which the monthly handling amounted to 318 thousand TEUs, compared to 387 thousand in 2024, recording a decrease of 17.9%.

At a nine-month level, from January 2025 to September 2025, a total of 3 million containers were transported compared to 3.1 million in the corresponding period of 2024, down 2.4%.
