Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held a press conference after their meeting at the Maximos Mansion, where the Prime Minister expressed his support for the Ukrainian people against the Russian invasion, while also referring to bilateral energy agreements.

“We stand by the Ukrainian people. Greece sided with the defender, against an attack that violates every principle of sovereignty and legitimacy,” Mitsotakis stressed, starting the joint statements.

Making a comparison with the Turkish occupation of Cyprus, Mitsotakis stressed that for Greece, respect for borders is non-negotiable: “The inviolability of borders is non-negotiable,” he stated.

“In Greece you will find a steadfast ally. We have stood in favor of Ukraine’s European path, in which we are ready to assist,” he said, addressing the Ukrainian President.

On energy

The relations between Greece and Ukraine are now acquiring a new dimension, that of energy security, through the vertical corridor under development and the Alexandroupolis-Odessa axis.

Mitsotakis said that Kiev is gaining access to diversified and reliable energy sources, which is a decisive contribution to energy stability and security:

The plan is made possible by the infrastructure, the strategic location, and the agreements signed by Greece just last week, Mitsotakis noted, stating that “our country is recognized as a point of reference in the wider region.”

“We are talking about the immediate activation of the vertical corridor, which connects Greece with Ukraine,” he said, also referring to the TERNA agreement. Greece is becoming an energy security provider. These are steps towards Europe’s independence from Russian energy,” Mitsotakis noted, referring to the government’s effort.

Assistance in reconstruction

“Greece will provide assistance in post-war reconstruction,” Mitsotakis noted. “We will be present both in the construction sector, through PPPs, and in the areas of education, protection of artistic monuments,” he added.
