Water shortage measures should have been introduced earlier, Professor of Natural Disasters Costas Synolakis estimated speaking on Naftemporiki TV.
As he emphasized, the “Evrytos” plan should have been started earlier, while it should have been studied in parallel with other alternative solutions.
Synolakis explained that the program essentially involves the diversion of some rivers in western Greece, in order to strengthen the artificial lake of Evinos, in order to channel more water to Athens.
“Let’s also look at the environmental consequences – We have reached the point of no return”
He also mentioned that “these projects, however, upset the hydrological and ecological balance of an area” and stressed that “we must also look at the environmental consequences and compare these consequences with other solutions that may exist, so that society can choose the most appropriate solution.”
“No campaign to reduce consumption”
The Professor underlined the fact that no campaign has been carried out to inform citizens about water scarcity and the correct use of water.
Solution of water recycling
Referring to other solutions, he said that in the rest of the Western world, which is facing similar issues, the water that passes through sewage treatment plants is recycled. “It is a solution that is considered more economical than large-scale desalination,” he stressed.
