The International Association of Dry Cargo Shipowners (Intercargo) celebrated its 45th anniversary in Athens.

Intercargo has more than 350 members from over 35 countries, including more than 180 regular members representing over 4,400 dry bulk carriers, with a total capacity of almost 420 million DWT.

This figure represents approximately 40% of the global dry bulk fleet, highlighting Intercargo’s growing influence and representation in the sector.

Since its founding in 1980, Intercargo has steadily expanded its global reach, welcoming shipowners, managers, operators and service providers in the dry bulk shipping industry.

Today, it covers all the major shipping regions of the world, reflecting a shared commitment to quality, safety and environmental responsibility.

Its work focuses on safety, sustainability and the recognition of the essential contribution of dry bulk shipping to societies and economies worldwide.

Growing challenges

In his welcome address at the Intercargo dinner, the Association’s President Yannis Xylas raised the issue of rapid changes and growing challenges facing the sector, from the path of decarbonization and digitalization to changes in trade patterns and regulatory complexity. “Our unity and common purpose as an industry have never been more important,” he noted, adding:

“Intercargo continues to work tirelessly within the International Maritime Organization (IMO), as well as with regional and national bodies, to ensure that the voice of our members is heard and respected, that regulations are realistic and proportionate, and that the dry bulk shipping sector continues to operate safely, sustainably and efficiently. As we celebrate our 45th anniversary, we also look to the future. The next chapter of Intercargo will be one of collaboration, innovation and leadership.”

“Together,” Xylas added, “we will continue to support dry bulk shipping, expand our technical expertise and uphold the highest standards of safety and environmental responsibility that define our industry.”

Xylas emphasized that Greek shipowners have been at the forefront of the dry bulk shipping sector for decades, setting standards of excellence, integrity and professionalism that have inspired generations around the world. “As we reflect on Intercargo’s 45 years of contribution to the shipping industry, we can feel proud of our journey,” he concluded, adding: “Throughout these decades, Intercargo has remained true to its mission: to promote safety, quality, efficiency, environmental responsibility and fair treatment of dry bulk carriers and their seafarers. These values remain at the core of everything we do.”
