Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy Vassilis Kikilias highlighted the strategic importance of the Port of Thessaloniki for the development of Northern Greece during his visit to the city on Tuesday.
Kikilias said the expansion of Pier 6 and the rapid growth of cruise activity are key drivers of local economic development, supporting investment, creating new jobs and opening opportunities for younger generations.
The minister held a meeting at the Thessaloniki Port Authority S.A. (ThPA), where he was briefed by management on the progress of the Pier 6 expansion project and toured the port facilities.
During the meeting, he stressed that the Pier 6 expansion would strengthen the port’s role as a hub for trade, transport, logistics and energy, creating new growth prospects for the region.
“The agreement that was signed enables infrastructure investments worth 200 million euros, including the expansion of Pier 6 by more than 500 metres, dredging works and the ability to accommodate much larger and more modern vessels. It will increase the port’s efficiency, while during the construction phase of the expansion project around 20,000 jobs are expected to be created and maintained,” Kikilias said.
During his visit to Thessaloniki, the minister also addressed the 7th Balkan Forum, where he highlighted shipping and ports as key pillars of Greece’s new growth model, linking them to higher incomes, the creation of well-paid jobs and greater opportunities for young people to build their future in Greece.
