Ionic has placed an order for four newbuild tankers at Japanese shipyards, reaffirming its strategic commitment to fleet renewal.

As the company’s Chief Executive Officer, Dimitris Sarakakis, revealed to a Japanese media outlet, the new orders include both Suezmax and Aframax tankers. He noted that the decision is driven primarily by fleet renewal rather than expansion, as Ionic sees an increasing need for newer and more efficient vessels at a time when the global tanker fleet is ageing.

At the same time, Sarakakis stressed that the global tanker orderbook has expanded significantly in recent months and that restraint is therefore required.

The company currently operates a fleet of seven tankers and eleven bulk carriers, all built in Japan, maintaining a consistent long-term investment strategy.
