The plan of the Hellenic Marine Environment Protection Association (HELMEPA) for the creation of the “HELMEPA House” is taking shape.
HELMEPA President Semiramis Paliou had announced the Association’s plan at the last general assembly, stressing: “We want to create a ‘HELMEPA house’ for everyone, a place where society can connect with the sea. A gift from HELMEPA to future generations.”
A few months later, the ambitious plan is being implemented in cooperation with the Piraeus Port Authority.
Paliou and the CEO of PPA, SU Xudong, signed a concession agreement for a 2,000 sq.m. space granted by the major port to HELMEPA.
In the context of the Association’s Forum, she emphasized: “I am proud to announce that we have just secured a space to host the HELMEPA House. This is a historic moment, thanks to the valuable support of the Piraeus Port Authority, who share our vision of offering Greek society a space dedicated to the sea. We have been entrusted with a site in Drapetsona, which we will transform into the first monument of its kind in Greece. At the HELMEPA House, the doors will be open to everyone. Imagine a class of nine-year-old children arriving one Tuesday morning. They run from room to room. They touch a model of the seabed and discover what lives down there. In another room, they pretend to be the captain of a ship, deciding how to avoid a whale. They meet a real seafarer who tells them what it is like to wake up on a ship in the middle of the ocean. In the afternoon, a group of cadets comes for training. A family can also visit the area. They learn how a ship works. They learn why the sea matters. They visit our children’s art exhibition. They explore. They create. They discover.”
“And as visitors walk through, they discover the history of HELMEPA, how a group of visionary Greek shipowners and seafarers turned their love for the sea into a voluntary movement, and how that movement gave the entire shipping industry a way to act collectively. And that is exactly the story we continue today together with you. With the cooperation of PPA, the port of Piraeus becomes part of the heritage for humanity, for maritime life, and for our entire blue planet. May this new home sail with fair winds and favorable seas. For our members, for our seafarers, for our children, and for generations to come,” Paliou added.
