Scenarios about potential changes in the ownership of fiber-to-the-home and business (FTTH) infrastructure are circulating, with market sources referring to discussions between OTE and Nova.
According to the same sources, a possible acquisition by OTE of Nova’s FTTH network is at the center of these contacts, although neither party has confirmed or denied the reports, saying “no comment”. Based on Nova’s latest published data, United Fiber (UF), a wholly owned subsidiary of United Group (which also owns Nova), had deployed approximately 850,000 FTTH connections by early this year, with a target of reaching 950,000 by the summer.
Of this total, the highest concentration is in Attica with around 520,000 connections, followed by Thessaloniki with 110,000, the Peloponnese with 95,000, Crete—primarily Heraklion—with 70,000, and Thessaly with 55,000. United Fiber’s investment program also includes the interconnection of Athens and Thessaloniki via a fiber-optic infrastructure of approximately 600 kilometers, a project completed in 2025 that enhances connectivity both domestically and with networks in Southeastern and Western Europe. OTE is the country’s largest FTTH infrastructure provider, having deployed approximately 2.1 million connections. Its target, according to management statements and following the full assumption of the partially subsidized Ultra Fast Broadband (UFBB) project, is to reach 3.5 million connections by 2030.
Meanwhile, the fiber market is evolving in an increasingly competitive environment, with PPC also entering the sector through the development of its FiberGrid network. Under its strategic plan, the network is expected to cover approximately 3.8 million households and businesses by 2028, while according to the most recent available data it has already reached coverage of 1.7 million.
Despite statements from Nova’s management that the company is not in a sale process, its main shareholder, private equity fund BC Partners, operates within a defined investment horizon, a factor which, according to market participants, keeps all options open. BC Partners CEO Nikos Stathopoulos, speaking recently at the Delphi Economic Forum, stated that “I am very satisfied with the Nova venture,” adding that he is tired of hearing that “it is for sale.”
This statement concerns the company’s overall presence, while the aforementioned information is limited to the infrastructure level.
