A historic first for Greek shipping. A tanker operated by Tsakos Energy Navigation, controlled by Dr. Nikos Tsakos—the Greek-flagged Asahi Princess—is set to become the first vessel to transport Iraqi oil that has been delivered overland to Syria by hundreds of tanker trucks.
The Syrian Petroleum Company announced that loading of approximately 85,000 tonnes of Iraqi fuel has commenced at the Baniyas refinery on the Mediterranean coast.
With the Strait of Hormuz remaining closed, Iraq plans to transport up to 650,000 tonnes of oil per month overland to Syria, equivalent to around 140,000 barrels per day. Part of these volumes will be directed toward supplying Syrian power generation units, according to the Middle East Economic Survey.
This development has been made possible following the reopening of the Al-Tanf–Al-Waleed border crossing between Syria and Iraq, which had remained closed for 11 years after the area was seized by ISIS in 2015.
