Sailing through the Strait of Hormuz is entering a renewed phase of tension following the seizure of two container vessels by the naval command of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), with Tehran warning that “any disruption to maritime security constitutes a red line.”
According to a statement attributed to Iran’s War Messaging Center, “two non-compliant vessels, MSC Francesca and Epaminondas, were seized by the IRGC Navy and escorted to the Iranian coast, as part of efforts to enforce control over maritime transit.”

Epaminondas, a 6,673 TEU vessel (built in 1998), managed by MSC and linked to Greek interests, is reported to have come under attack by an Iranian naval unit. Information indicated that the bridge sustained significant damage, although no injuries among the crew have been reported.
Meanwhile, MSC Francesca, with a capacity of 11,660 TEU (built in 2008), was immobilised at sea following an attempted transit of the Strait, reinforcing the perception of comprehensive control that Iran is seeking to assert in the area.
The two vessels are among at least eight MSC containerships that have remained stranded in the Persian Gulf since the onset of the conflict, underscoring the ongoing disruption of maritime flows along one of the world’s most critical energy and trade corridors.
