The Master Plan for the Port of Patras has been approved through the issuance of the relevant Presidential Decree, Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, Vassilis Kikilias, said.
According to the Ministry, this marks a pivotal step toward upgrading one of the country’s most important ports. The new framework sets out the port’s development strategy, including clear provisions on land use, infrastructure projects, traffic management, and environmental permitting.
As highlighted by the Ministry, the approval is the result of a lengthy process, to which the Patras Port Authority S.A. made a significant contribution, both in the planning phase and in the preparation of the necessary studies and approvals.
Key provisions of the Master Plan
The Master Plan places emphasis on strengthening cargo activity and international connectivity, improving ferry services and passenger facilities, and advancing tourism development through modern infrastructure, such as the marina in the Northern Port. It also provides for energy infrastructure, including Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) facilities, and the enhancement of rail connectivity.
Particular focus is placed on the Southern Port, which is set to become a key hub for cargo and energy activities, while the Northern Port will be developed for tourism, passenger, and urban uses.
As noted by the Ministry, the new plan establishes a stable framework for investment and enhances prospects for job creation, while incorporating the requirements of European and national environmental legislation, with a view to ensuring the port’s sustainable operation.
The approval forms part of a broader strategy to upgrade the country’s ports and strengthen their role as drivers of growth, connectivity, and Greece’s energy presence in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Kikilias stated: “The approval of the Master Plan for the Port of Patras paves the way for further development, investment, and job creation. We are strengthening cargo activity, upgrading ferry services and services to citizens, and moving forward with the development of modern tourism and energy infrastructure.”
“The plan is part of the Ministry’s overall strategy to modernize and enhance the role of ports in the country’s growth trajectory,” Kikilias added.
