Paul Xiradakis, President of the Hellenic Shipowners Association of Tugs, Salvage, Antipollution and OSVs, has positively assessed the recent anti-pollution exercise conducted in the maritime area of Elefsina, while emphasizing that its findings must be evaluated realistically.
He noted that conducting such exercises represents a critical step, as it translates planning from a theoretical framework into practical application and allows for meaningful conclusions regarding operational readiness.
At the same time, he stressed that results should not be automatically regarded as positive, since a “flawless” outcome may conceal shortcomings either in the planning phase or in the execution of the exercise itself.
Xiradakis highlighted the need for continuous improvement of the maritime pollution response system, pointing out that there is significant room to strengthen processes and operational capabilities.
However, he underscored that a meaningful upgrade of the framework requires a clear and modern regulatory environment that effectively recognizes and supports certified anti-pollution companies.
