“Crises show the value and capabilities of political leadership. Governments are not judged in easy times; they are judged in difficult ones. To put it more plainly: they are not judged in calm seas, but in adverse conditions,” noted Minister of National Economy and Finance Kyriakos Pierrakakis, speaking at the “Peloponnese Forum 2026” on the theme “Resilient Market – Sustainable Economy.”
He added: “In this sense, political leadership is not there to steer only in calm and uneventful times. In times of crisis, composure and speed of decision-making are essential. This government and its Prime Minister have demonstrated their ability to safeguard and guarantee stability, particularly under pressure, as since 2019 we have been consistently confronted with emerging challenges—whether referring to the events in Evros, the pandemic, or Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the subsequent energy crisis.”
“We will continue to support citizens, employees, businesses and production for as long as necessary,” the Minister stressed.
Impact of the Middle East crisis and government interventions
He added: “The crisis in the Middle East finds Greece at a time when its economy is far more resilient than in the past. This is, I believe, self-evident. However, we are facing a particularly concerning situation, the duration and potential scale of which remain uncertain. The key word here is uncertainty. Wars no longer affect only national borders; they also impact economies, societies and ultimately citizens’ daily lives—especially when they intersect with the energy sector.”
“Price increases have accumulated over recent years, which is why strengthening citizens’ purchasing power remains the government’s primary priority.”
