International shipping is at a critical juncture, where the need for decarbonization, geopolitical instability and increasing regulatory complexity are redefining the role of finance.

In this context, the Poseidon Principles Annual Disclosure Report 2025 clearly records that, despite delays and contradictions in the global regulatory framework, the financial community remains a central driver of shipping’s transition towards a more sustainable model.

The Poseidon Principles are the first global framework to align shipping finance with the climate goals of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

This is a voluntary initiative of banks and financial institutions, which was launched in 2019 with the aim of integrating CO₂ emission reduction into shipping lending decisions.

Signatories commit to measuring, disclosing and assessing the emissions intensity of their maritime loan portfolios against the decarbonisation path set by the IMO by 2050.

This turns sustainability into a measurable financial benchmark.

According to the report, as net zero targets for shipping become more ambitious and regulatory pressures intensify, banks that sign up to the “Neptune Principles” are moving in a direction to adapt their portfolios.

The biggest challenge for the industry is the gap between strategic ambition and practical implementation.

Although the IMO’s GHG Strategy 2023 sets a clear goal of net zero by 2050, the transition requires huge capital, technologies that are still maturing, and clearer incentive mechanisms.
