Greece’s dynamic transformation into a stable, competitive and extroverted investment destination was highlighted at the Capital Link Forum in New York, where government officials, investors and market executives described a common picture of recovery, depth of reforms and strategic regional upgrading.

In the energy sector, Greece was presented as a key player in the Eastern Mediterranean. Exxon Mobil’s Vice President of Global Research, John Ardill, described the Eastern Mediterranean as a “proven natural gas producing region”, confirming that exploratory drilling in Greece may begin in 2027.

Dr. John Ardill, underlined the importance of natural gas for energy security and referred to Greece’s research potential. “Energy demand continues to grow worldwide, while oil and natural gas remain essential to support modern living standards. Natural gas offers significant emission reductions compared to coal, while providing reliable baseload power that complements renewable energy sources,” he stressed.

He explained that, as Exxon Mobil moves to search for new sources of supply, “the Eastern Mediterranean stands out as a proven gas-rich region and is emerging as a regional energy hub, thanks to its proximity to European markets and its untapped exploration potential.”

“Following the success of our exploration activities in Cyprus in 2019 and 2025, we are particularly pleased to have entered the offshore Plot 2 in Greece. We look forward to moving forward with our assessment, which could lead to potential exploration drilling in 2027,” he noted.

ExxonMobil ready to support the development of Greek energy resources

Closing his presentation, Dr. Ardil underlined ExxonMobil’s strategic readiness to support the development of Greek energy resources, noting that “with a proven track record of success in exploration, a leading LNG portfolio, a strong commitment to safe and responsible operations and an ambition to achieve net zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions for managed assets by 2050, ExxonMobil is in a strong position to help Greece realize its hydrocarbon potential,” he stressed.

Greece is gradually strengthening its position in the energy sector

The Deputy CEO of HELLENiQ ENERGY, George Alexopoulos, stated, among other things, that “Greece is gradually strengthening its position in the energy sector in the Southeastern European region, as the significant progress in hydrocarbon exploration, the steady expansion of natural gas infrastructure and developments in the electricity sector shape its essential strategic role. “Exploration activity in the Ionian Sea and south of Crete is accelerating, with the participation of large American energy groups. The first exploration drilling after decades of inactivity is expected to take place in 2027. HELLENiQ ENERGY is proud to participate in the effort to exploit the natural resources of our country,” he noted.
