Thessaloniki was at the center of the public debate on Artificial Intelligence at a recent conference with the participation of government officials, scientists, academics and representatives of the city’s innovation ecosystem, with the aim of highlighting the opportunities and challenges of the rapid spread of AI in every sector of social and economic life.
The conference was held at the initiative of MEP Dimitris Tsiodras who underlined that Artificial Intelligence has already moved from theory to the daily experience of citizens, noting that Thessaloniki has a particularly strong technological ecosystem, which has already been chosen by large international companies for their investments. He also stressed the need for Greece to formulate a comprehensive strategy, in coordination with European initiatives, so that the country and the city can effectively exploit the potential of AI.
In his video message, EU Transport Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas underlined that Europe aims to become the “Continent of Artificial Intelligence”, presenting European initiatives such as the AI Action Plan, Data Labs, AI Factories and InvestAI.
Economy and Entrepreneurship in the Age of AI
Deputy Minister of Development Stavros Kalafatis called AI “a new era” that is transforming the global economy, noting that Greece must accelerate its national strategy for AI, focusing on applied research and entrepreneurship. He cited international data showing that AI’s contribution to the economy is already enormous, reinforcing the need for investment.
