Decrease in Greek shipping registry, despite overall hike in number of vessels

While Greek-controlled shipping increased its percentage of the global fleet, the number of vessels (above 1,000 gt) on the Greek registry fell slightly, with the difference seen in the commensurate increase in Greek-owned ships flying “flags of convenience”.

The percentage of Greek-owned vessels outside Greece’s registry reached 77.92 percent in 2016, whereas in 2009 it was 68.82 percent, only to top at 78.76 percent in 2017.

According to shipping analysts that spoke to “N”, more bureaucratic hurdles have arisen of late in terms of listing a vessel on the Greek registry.
