A clash over an obscure but controversial article allowing ministers, lawmakers and top ministry officials to participate in off-shore companies – passed more than a week ago in a latest austerity package – continued unabated on Monday.
Main opposition New Democracy (ND) party demanded to know why the government passed such legislation and who, in the government and Parliament, is an owner, manager or shareholder of an off-shore company or companies.
ND also tabled a parliament question on the issue, while both social democrat-leaning parties in Parliament, PASOK and Potami, also sharply criticized the development.
In a response, a government spokeswoman called on ND leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis to clarify what he means by “reforms”, charging that he is actually in favor of wage cuts and firings in the public sector as well as more social security payment reductions.
