Opposition reaction to Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras’ address before his party’s Parliament group members on Friday was swift and severe, as the weekend looms as pivotal for the leftist government’s prospects, given the expected vote in Parliament on two draft bills prescribing more tax hikes and pension reforms to cut social security expenditures in the country.
Main opposition New Democracy party aimed directly at Tsipras, calling him “unfit to govern” and accusing the Greek premier of “polarizing and dividing” the country.
ND spokesman Giorgos Koumoutsakos put the tab of extra austerity measures being brought forth by the government at 12 billion euros.
“Unrepentant, he acts as if he doesn’t see the catastrophe he has brought up to now. He acts as if he doesn’t understand that he is again dragging the country to ground zero,” Koumoutsakos said, while referring to what he called Tsipras’ “lies and insults”.
The socialist PASOK party referred to an address by a “panic-stricken politician before the popular outburst and reactions to a catastrophic policy”.
