Corfu Port Authority S.A. inaugurated the new passenger terminal at the port of Gaios on Paxos island, a project aimed at upgrading its port infrastructure and improving connectivity, transport safety and passenger services for residents and visitors.
The new 320-square-metre terminal, built at a cost of 911,000 euros, has been designed as a modern, multi-purpose facility serving ferry passengers, small cruise vessels and the future operation of a seaplane network through the island’s licensed water aerodrome.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Vassilis Kikilias, Deputy Minister Stefanos Gikas, local government officials and representatives of the maritime and business communities.
The project was financed through the European THEMIS and SWAN programmes, with the Corfu Port Authority contributing approximately 300,000 euros from its own funds, reflecting its continued investment in upgrading port infrastructure.
As part of the same investment programme, the authority is also proceeding with a new 198,400-euro project to procure and install an intelligent berth monitoring system for recreational vessels.
The system is expected to improve berth management, enhance services for port users and support the further digitalisation of the authority’s port facilities.
Kikilias said the new passenger terminal provides a modern gateway to the island, improving safety, functionality and the quality of services offered to visitors.
“The new passenger terminal on Paxos is a modern infrastructure project that upgrades the first impression visitors have of the island by providing safety, functionality and high-quality services. This is not a standalone project but part of a broader strategy to strengthen island infrastructure through careful planning, secured funding and respect for the unique character of each island,” he said.
He added that Greece’s island geography should be viewed as a competitive advantage rather than a disadvantage, arguing that investment in infrastructure, ferry services, tourism and shipping can create a strong development ecosystem that encourages younger generations to remain on the islands while attracting former residents to return.
“Paxos is a clear example of successful development and deserves infrastructure that matches its growth potential and unique beauty. We will continue investing in projects that strengthen island communities and secure a better future for both residents and visitors,” Kikilias stated.
