ELSTAT: Substantial primary surplus of 4.8%

The 2024 primary surplus exceeded even the most optimistic forecasts.

According to data announced by the Hellenic Statistical Authority and Eurostat, a primary surplus of 4.8% of GDP or 11.4 billion euros was registered in 2024 compared to a forecast for a primary surplus of 2.5% of GDP based on the 2025 budget.

Also, the 2024 budget showed a fiscal surplus of 1.3% of GDP compared to a deficit of 1.4% in 2023.

At the eurozone level, Greece, along with Denmark (+4.5%), Ireland and Cyprus (4.3% each), Luxembourg (1%) and Portugal (0.7%) were the only countries to record a surplus last year.

Significant debt reduction

At the same time, Greece may remain the country with the highest debt, but it is recording a rapid reduction as it decreased by 10.3% within a year.

More specifically, the debt fell to 153.6% of GDP in 2024 from 163.9% of GDP in 2023.
