«Greece is ready to participate in any international initiative for maritime safety, in a second phase»

Commenting on the escalating attacks by Yemen’s Houthi rebels on commercial ships in the Red Sea, Greek Shipping Minister, Christos Stylianides, estimated that the situation will be set under control thanks to the decisive initiatives taken by the international community.

The minister added that Greece is ready to participate in any international initiative for maritime safety, in a second phase.

Referring to the decision of the largest shipping companies to reroute some ships around southern Africa by temporarily suspending the passage of ships from the specific point for security reasons, he said that this will significantly increase the operating costs of the ships with an increase in the price of the products that will also affect consumers.

On the US decision to announce a 10-nation alliance in the Red Sea in order to deal with repeated attacks on merchant ships, he said the Ministry of Shipping has already been in contact with EU and US officials on the matter.
