An ongoing EU summit in Brussels has apparently failed to defuse the increasingly explosive situation in many member-states concerning the refugee crisis, although most European leaders appear convinced that the “key” to any solution lies with Turkey. Along those lines, European leaders have scheduled a meeting with Turkish PM Ahmet Davutoglu in Brussels on March 8.
On his part, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras repeatedly tried to get a commitment on the part of other member-states that no unilateral decisions will be taken, such as closing borders. Tsipras indirectly threatened to veto joint action.
Although no such commitment is mentioned in the joint communique of conclusions, Berlin and Paris reportedly promised as much. One conclusion merely cited encouragement that member-states must act in a coordinated manner.
