A provision in an omnibus draft bill that would have facilitated the relocation of the greater Athens area’s only casino from atop Mt. Parnitha to a more accessible site has been withdrawn by the government ahead of a vote.
The specific article, 111, had been included in a draft bill featuring reforms to the bankruptcy code in the country and applying measures to boost electronic transactions.
As such, Regency Casino Mont Parnes will remain at its mountainous location until new legislation is submitted and ratified.
A relevant deputy minister said another draft bill will be tabled in January, whereas a provision allowing an international tender for a new casino at the Helleniko site remains — where a second casino in the greater Athens area will be allowed.
The development generated an immediate outcry by a group of Parnitha casino employees who were in attendance at a parliament session.
