The more ominous element of the figure is the fact that the rising jobless rate came during the peak summer season, when unemployment usually eases on a seasonal basis.

Unemployment in Greece again picked up in August 2016, nearing the one-quarter threshold of the active population, at 23.4 percent, slightly up from 23.3 percent in July 2016, according to Eurostat.

The more ominous element of the figure is the fact that the rising jobless rate came during the peak summer season, when unemployment usually eases on a seasonal basis.

Greece "boasted" the highest unemployment rate, followed by Spain, with 19.2 percent. The Czech Republic and Germany fielded the lowest unemployment rates, at 3.8 percent and 4.1 percent, respectively.
