A shadowy urban terrorist group is reportedly behind the assault rifle attack outside the offices of the PASOK party in central Athens on Monday afternoon.
Greek authorities said spent cartridges recovered at the scene of Monday’s attack match a weapon used in two previous such incidents, both again targeting PASOK’s offices, as well as shots fired against the Mexican embassy in Athens.
The members of the extremist “antifa-like” group call themselves the “organization for revolutionary self-defense”.
The targets of Monday’s shooting were apparently riot policeman guarding the political party’s offices, itself a favorite target of various assailants going back two decades.
The weapon used in the four shootings, based on ballistic evidence, is an AK-47 “Kalashnikov”.
Eyewitnesses referred to a gunman dressed in dark clothes who fled the scene atop a motorcycle driven by an accomplice.
