Latest business licensing simplification cited by govt

The government will reportedly unveil a new framework aimed at simplifying the procedures for business licensing, with the changes up for public debate expected to be announced within the day or Wednesday.

The report was disseminated by the state-run news agency.

The aim of the draft framework is to improve the business climate in the recession-plagued country and to boost competitiveness in Greece, which usually ranks at the bottom of various global indexes, in terms of more developed countries, and at the negative end of EU member-states’ competitiveness ratings.

Slashing wait times by reducing red tape and ensuring a more transparent framework are the goals, among others.

Greece’s “heavy industries”, namely, the production of foods and beverages, the restaurant-café-bar sector and tourism-related enterprises are cited as priorities.

Similar initiatives have been announced in the past by repeated government, with results mixed.
